Kermet Seabourn Graveside Service

June 14, 2014 by Keith Seabourn 1 Comment

My Dad, Kermet Seabourn, passed away on May 16, 2014. His funeral service was May 20. I spoke at his funeral service on May 20 (see the message here). I also gave this message at the graveside service at Grove Hill Memorial Park.

Kermet's BibleI asked the family if I could lead this graveside service to honor my Dad. I also asked my Mom if I could use this Bible that belonged to my Dad.

I had not looked through this Bible until this morning as we prepared to leave for the funeral service. Inside I learned that this Bible is slightly older than I am. My Mom gave it to my dad on February 27, 1951, his birthday, a few months before I was born. My mom was pregnant with me and probably looked about like my niece Brittany looks this morning.

I also learned something else from my Dad’s Bible this morning. On a blank page in the beginning my Dad had written The Plan of Salvation and key verses.

Bible flyleaf Bible plan of salvation

The Plan of Salvation

  • John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [ESV]
  • Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God [ESV]
  • Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. [ESV]
  • Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [ESV]
  • John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. [ESV]

Although he rarely spoke evangelistically, my Dad wanted to be ready to share the good news.

My Dad bought these grave plots when he was 25 or 30 years old. But I think he bought them not really expecting to use them. Early one morning many years ago as he and I were out on the deer lease, I shared with my Dad that I wondered if our young daughter Jennifer would grow to adulthood before Jesus came back. My Dad surprised me by saying he felt the same way when I was young. He said he had expected Jesus to return before I reached adulthood.

My Dad made preparations in case he needed this plot of ground, but he lived as if he would never need this plot. He was always ready to meet Jesus.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-28, Paul writes:

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

One morning, Daddy’s body will rise from this grave and be rejoined with his soul. One morning, Jesus will appear in that eastern sky to gather us together. My Dad was expecting that in his lifetime. So am I. Paul wrote this down so that we could comfort and encourage one another with these words.

So we commit my Dad’s body to this plot of earth to await the time Jesus will call it out of this grave. My Dad is already enjoying heaven. This body will be raised and transformed one day.

The Task

May 31, 2014 by Keith Seabourn Leave a Comment

Your task is to develop a social media strategy to identify persons of peace among young professionals living in an urban African environment who want to launch churches and spiritual movements.

This was our assignment during Indigitous Addis. 130 people from 17 countries spent 3 days learning from each other and from technology leaders.

keith-kyamaKyama Mugambi was my frequent partner last week. He is in the photo at the top of this page. Kyama was part of the social media strategy group and we also enjoyed meals together.

Kyama is the Executive Pastor and gives leadership to international outreach for Mavuno Church. Mavuno means harvest in Swahili. Mavuno’s mission is to the young professionals in the capital cities of Africa.

Kyama also shares my passion to see young leaders grow into responsible roles. In the future, he plans to step out of his current leadership role before the age gap with his church target audience gets too large.

Indigitous created 13 projects ranging from evangelistic videos to mobile apps to strategic marketing plans. One team was excited to lead a number of people to the Lord as part of testing their online project.

We are connecting people to Jesus and engaging them in churches through digital strategies.

The richness and weirdness of growing up in another culture

May 1, 2014 by Keith Seabourn Leave a Comment

Third-culture kids (TCKs) and Missionary Kids (MKs) are special people. They have unique experiences that shape them for a lifetime. We have three MKs. The world is a broader place. The toughest question remains, “Where are you from?”

This video captures the experience extraordinarily well. It is worth 28 of your minutes.

On being global…

March 16, 2014 by Keith Seabourn Leave a Comment

GCM i4M - Feb 2014 Bangkok-91

It is a hard thing to describe. It is a beautiful thing to experience. Standing in the midst of a global conference. 244 people from 76 countries. Most speak English. For many, it is their 2nd or 3rd or 4th language.

In one corner is the Spanish table, the translator quietly speaking his translation. A few feet away is the French table, listening intently to their translator. Over there is the Arabic table and farther along is the Russian table. Along the wall is the large East Asian language group.

The worship team starts to play. We unite our voices in praising the One who brought us all together. We all have a similar story. We all have been redeemed. We all have been given new life. We all have been called to help tell the grandest news ever. The language of forgiveness and adoration is universal.

Speakers share best practices. Videos and stories tell of churches multiplying themselves to 4th and 5th generations. We share strategies and tools and ideas. We share encouragement. We spend time in small groups discussing how to apply the ideas in our local situations.

We bathe the time in prayer. Early each morning some pray for hard areas of the world, asking God for breakthroughs. A prayer team is praying throughout the day. Small groups commit plans for the future to the Lord. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” [Psalms 127:1]

One leader wrote, “I want to thank you for the holy time we spent together in Thailand.”

All 244 leaders returned home with renewed vision and tested best practices to help plant multiplying churches. 46 countries have turned in plans to train 22,536 leaders who will each plant a church in 2014.

Serving as emcee. Speaking in the main sessions. Interviewing conferees. Documenting amazing stories. Helping administratively. It takes terrific teamwork to host a conference and we are part of a terrific team.

Here are some photos. Click to see larger versions.

The Gospel IS the Secret Sauce

March 9, 2014 by Keith Seabourn Leave a Comment

Sometimes we think there must be an additional secret sauce for the Christian life. Something that will initiate us into the Deeper Life or the Higher Life.

Sometimes we think the gospel provides our eternal fire insurance but there must be something more — a mystical experience, a discipleship course, a set of disciplines — that will lead us into a life-transforming experience.

The Bible connects our Christian life to the gospel. If you want to grow deeper in your Christian life, Paul says in Colossians 2:6-7, “as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Our marriages are expressions of the gospel. In Ephesians 5:25: “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

Our giving is an expression to the gospel. 2 Corinthians 9:13 says our giving is an expression of our confession of the gospel: “others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.”

Maturity in following Christ is connecting more and more of my life to the transforming power of the gospel: God loves me so much that he gave his son for me that I might know him eternally.

And God loves you that much too.

Is the gospel transforming your life?
